Richard Honey has recently completed a visit to Sierra Leone to provide advice and training to lawyers in his capacity as chairman of the steering group of the UK Sierra Leone Pro Bono Network. Richard visited with Rebecca Perlman of Herbert Smith Freehills and Momo Turay, the Network’s secretary and former manager for the Justice Sector Development Programme in Sierra Leone.
Richard provided training to lawyers contracted to work for the new Legal Aid Board in Sierra Leone on appellate advocacy.
The visit also involved discussions with the Chief Justice and judiciary on the development of the Judicial and Legal Training Institute and with the Legal Aid Board on the future training and assistance which the Network could provide. The group was able to attend the Annual Dinner of the Sierra Leone Bar Association.
During the visit the group also met stakeholders and partners in a variety of organisations, including the Africa Governance Initiative, the Anti-Corruption Commission, the Attorney General, the DFID Access to Justice and Security Programme, the Director of Public Prosecutions, the Justice Sector Co-Ordination Office, the Law Reform Commission, the Sierra Leone Bar Association, the Sierra Leone Law School, the United Nations Development Programme, the University of Makeni, AdvocAid, and a number of individual lawyers and judges.
