Permission was granted on 7 January for the Rhydcar West project, comprising a landmark ski centre, sport and leisure resort in Merthyr Tydfil, South Wales. The grant of planning permission follows the Welsh Government’s confirmation, given in November 2025, that the application would not be called in and the holding direction would be lifted.

The planning committee of Merthyr Tydfil County Borough Council had previously resolved to grant planning permission, against officers’ advice, by reason of the significant economic and other benefits that the proposal would deliver to the town and community.

The £300m leisure and tourism scheme will deliver a world‑class destination anchored by the UK’s longest indoor snow centre – around 400 metres – alongside a waterpark, indoor and outdoor activity centres, hotel accommodation and woodland lodges. The facility is intended to serve as a national centre of excellence and training base for GB and Welsh Olympic and Paralympic snow sports teams, positioning Merthyr Tydfil as a year‑round hub for sport and active leisure.

Douglas Edwards KC was instructed to advise the developer in respect of its successful application, instructed by Amardip Healy at Blake Morgan.
