Gregory Jones KC Installed as a Sheriff of the City of London

Chambers congratulates Gregory Jones KC on being sworn-in as a Sheriff of the City of London.  He will be the first practising KC to hold this 900-year office and only the second practising barrister.

The Sheriffs’ modern-day duties include assisting the Lord Mayor in his or her civic duties and serving, both at home and abroad, as ambassadors for the UK-based financial and professional services industry by promoting the UK as a place in which to do business. They also work to support the work of the Judges of the Old Bailey and the rule of law.  They reside at the Old Bailey during their shrieval year.

On his appointment, Gregory commented:

“I am delighted to have been elected as Sheriff and I look forward to supporting the Lord Mayor in his goals, in collaboration with my fellow Sheriff, David Chalk.
“The English legal system is the bedrock of the City of London’s success as the world’s leading financial centre and, during my shrieval year, I will promote the rule of law and legal services. The direct worth the UK legal services market grew by 8.3% last year at current prices, reaching £47.5bn. Market turnover was expected to grow to £50.3bn this year increasing to £61bn in 2027. The Old Bailey is a world-wide global brand. We will be holding a series of events to promote legal services.  The Old Bailey is the ideal platform on which to champion the symbiotic relationship between the law and the City and the provision of legal services.”

Gregory was elected in June 2024 and took up office on the 27 September 2024 for one year.

Prior to his election as Sheriff, Gregory was elected as an Alderman in 2016 and Common Councillor from 2012 serving the ward of Farringdon Without.

The office is part-time unpaid public service. During his shrieval year, Gregory will remain in full time practice at FTB and will be available for all types of advocacy and advisory work.  Please contact Paul Coveney or James Kemp to discuss Gregory’s availability.

Gregory was recently interviewed by Joshua Rozenberg KC (hon) at the Old Bailey about aspects of his role as Sheriff, living at the Old Bailey and aspects of the City of London’s work beyond the square mile.  The podcast is available to listen to free of charge here.
