British Land and Countryside Properties have been granted planning permission by the Secretary of State, in accordance with her Inspector's recommendations following a public local inquiry, on appeal from the refusal by West Berkshire District Council for a high density residential development of 350 dwellings at a density of 90 dph on the edge of Theale Village. On 19 July 2007 Mr J P Sargent BA (Hons) MA MRTPI sitting as Planning Inspector appointed by the Secretary of State dismissed the appeal of McCarthy & Stone (Developments) Limited against a decision of Hertsmere Borough Council refusing the company's application for planning permission for a development to form 39 (Category II) sheltered apartments for the elderly. The Secretaries of State for the Environment, Food and Rural Affairs and for Communities and Local Government have granted planning permission to Thames Water to develop the UK's first major desalination plant on part of the site of the existing Beckton Sewage Treatment Works in East London.
