Uber has today won its appeal against Transport for London’s refusal to renew its London PHV operator’s licence.  The Deputy Senior District Judge, sitting at Westminster Magistrates’ Court, decided that Uber London Limited is a fit and proper person to hold such a licence.

This is the second occasion on which Uber has been obliged to appeal a refusal by TfL, Uber previously having been granted a 15 month “probationary” licence by the Chief Magistrate in 2018. The Deputy Senior Judge found that despite admitted historical failings on the part of Uber, he found them, now, to be a fit and proper. He took into account Uber’s improvements in communication and system changes.

The Deputy Senior District granted Uber a licence of a period of 18 months subject to a suite of agreed conditions. Despite winning the appeal, Uber agreed to pay TfL’s costs in the agreed amount of £374,770.
