FTB is delighted to announce that Stephanie Bruce-Smith and Claire Nevin have both accepted invitations to join Chambers and will become tenants on 2 October 2023 after completion of their pupillages.

Stephanie Bruce-Smith

During pupillage, Stephanie has been supervised by Hugh Flanagan, Rebecca Clutten and Cain Ormondroyd. She welcomes instructions across all of Chambers’ practice areas.

Stephanie’s recent experience includes acting as junior counsel to Richard Honey KC alongside Ned Westaway and Esther Drabkin-Reiter in the Court of Appeal in Darwall v Dartmoor National Park Authority [2023] EWCA Civ 927. She is currently instructed as sole counsel on behalf of a residents’ association in an ongoing High Court challenge to a traffic regulation order (‘TRO’) and is also instructed as sole counsel in an ongoing enforcement inquiry on behalf of a local authority.

Stephanie also assisted several members across Chambers’ areas of practice. These include assisting Douglas Edwards KC on a challenge to an inspector’s decision raising several issues of procedural fairness, assisting Hugh Flanagan on a challenge concerning the correct interpretation of NPPF Green Belt policy; and assisting Rebecca Clutten on various legal questions arising in the context of ongoing or potential compulsory purchase matters.

Stephanie has gained extensive experience appearing as sole counsel before the Magistrates’ Court and licensing sub-committees.

In appropriate cases, Stephanie is happy to work on a pro-bono basis.

Claire Nevin

During pupillage, Claire has been supervised by Ned Westaway, Gregory Jones KC and Isabella Tafur.

Before her call to the Bar in 2021, Claire gained valuable experience of the intersection between environmental and human rights law in her work for the United Nations in Geneva, the Council of Europe in Strasbourg, the Irish Department of Foreign Affairs and a number of NGOs. The breadth of Claire’s previous experience with international organisations, a government department and campaign groups means she is already well-practised in considering complex and sensitive legal issues from a range of perspectives.

Claire is building a busy practice across all of Chambers’ practice areas. She has appeared as sole counsel for a Rule 6 Party in a five-day planning inquiry which encompassed issues such as designated Local Open Space, a Grade I listed heritage asset, ecology and the provision of affordable and market housing. Claire is currently instructed as sole counsel for a Rule 6 Party and junior counsel for a local authority in a number of upcoming planning inquiries. She is also building a busy environment law practice. The law of chemical regulation is a topic of particular interest to Claire and one she has written about for Chambers’ Environment Law Blog.

Stephanie and Claire welcome instructions to act individually or as a part of a team across all of Chambers’ practice areas.

If you would like to discuss Stephanie's or Claire's experience, availability or fees, please contact Paul Coveney, Senior Clerk (020 7427 1847).
