The case concerned a prisoner, Mark Alexander, who is serving a life sentence for the murder of his father. He has always maintained his innocence, and applied for permission to be interviewed by a journalist in the hope that it would elicit new evidence. When this was refused by the prison authorities, he issued a claim for judicial review. It was heard yesterday at Court 1 in the Royal Courts of Justice before Mr Justice Andrew Baker. 

Mr Alexander was represented by Greg Callus, a media law specialist at 5 Raymond Buildings, and John represented the Secretary of State. After hearing arguments the judge reserved the case, and a judgment is expected within the next few weeks. 

The proceedings have attracted press attention, notably in the Daily Mail as well as the Evening Standard and the Independent. It is expected to clarify some aspects of the law concerning Article 10 rights and the media.
