The Secretary of State has confirmed the Reigate and Banstead Borough Council (Marketfield Way) Compulsory Purchase Order 2018 and associated Highway Extinguishment Order

The Secretary of State has confirmed the Reigate and Banstead Borough Council (Marketfield Way) Compulsory Purchase Order 2018 and associated Highway Extinguishment Order.

Reigate and Banstead Borough Council made the Marketfield Way CPO pursuant to s.226 of the Town and Country Planning Act 1990 in 2018 to facilitate the regeneration of Redhill Town Centre. The regeneration of the town centre had long been a strategic priority for the Council and the Order Land was a priority site given its central location and proximity to Redhill’s rail and bus stations.

The Order Land comprised an underused car park with mixed office and retail buildings. Confirmation of the Order will allow the Council to transform the site into a vibrant mixed use development  with 153 apartments; 9,442m2 of town centre uses (shops, restaurants and cafes) with new shop fronts along Redhill High Street, a pedestrian promenade and a new six-screen cinema.

The Secretary of State accepted that the CPO would promote and improve the economic, social and environmental well-being of the area and that there was a compelling case in the public interest for its confirmation.
